Meet the Woolly Coneflower! 🌿
TAXA TUESDAY 🌿
w/ the Florida Native Plant Society!
Meet the Woolly Coneflower!
Woolly Coneflower
aka Softhair Coneflower
Rudbeckia mollis
Family: Asteraceae
This showy perennial species is found across North Florida in longleaf pine sandhills.
The species name “mollis” means “soft” in Latin and refers to the fine, woolly hairs covering the leaves and stem - to which its common name also refers to.
This covering of fine hairs provides protection from the intense sunlight in the sandhills it evolved in; reflecting heat and preventing evapotranspiration (water loss).
We have ten species of Rudbeckia native to Florida (not including subspecies) and they are all commonly known as “coneflowers” due to the cone-like arrangement of their disc flowers.
Woolly Coneflower is easy to grow in spots with full sun and well-drained soils, but is prone to fungal issues if given too much shade or moisture. As with most Rudbeckias, this species is easy to grow from seed, and will readily re-seed if there is exposed soil nearby.
…………
What do we mean when we say “Taxa Tuesday”?
TAXON/TAXA:
A taxon refers to any group (or individual) at any level within the taxonomic ranking system. This could be a species, genus, family, order, or any individual or group. Taxa is plural for taxon. Thanks for tuning in! 👋🏻

Hopefully youll see this even a year later, but im curious about the phylogeny of psittacina if purpurea and rosea are sister to the rest of sarracenia. Where does psittacina lie in this, or rather on which side? Ive always thought of them as a sort of purpurea gone awry I suppose haha

    • @floridanativeplantsociety
      @floridanativeplantsociety 2 місяці тому

Purpurea and rosea are in their own clade, while flava, minor and psittacina are in their own clade. If you google “Sarracenia phylogenetic tree” you should be able to find one. 👍🏻

These have puzzled me for years, I could clearly see they were distinct from Live oaks, almost like a dwarfed sub species, and the ones I see never make Acorns, and the bloom catkin seems truncated then just a burr is formed without an Acorn. 40 yrs and I haven't noticed them have a mast year.
